According to the statistics obtained from APNIC (Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre), India has emerged as a frontrunner in IPv6 adoption, showcasing a proactive approach in embracing the future of networking technologies. However, IPv6 adoption within University networks has been relatively slow. This presentation will delve into the specifics of how NITK Surathkal has been steadily transitioning its campus network to IPv6, utilizing various FOSS tools and technologies. This effort is driven by students and faculty members at NITK Surathkal.
The following points will be discussed in detail:
1. How to obtain an IPv6 address block?
2. How to advertise the IPv6 address block? Should we set up our own ASN? Do we have to run our BGP instance?
3. How to set up a small IPv6 testbed using open source tools such as Kea DHCPv6, BIND9, OPNsense and phpIPAM?
4. Network performance diagnostics and measurements using Wireshark.
5. Challenges and opportunities in using FOSS for IPv6 migration.
