Making Justice Data Accessible

Approved

The delivery of justice is an essential public good. Though we often complain about its shortcomings there is little public analysis of the capacity constraints – budgets, human resources, infrastructure and workloads that negatively affect the ability of its sub-systems: police, prisons, legal aid and judiciary to deliver justice.

The India Justice Report sets out to present a holistic picture of the justice system in each state and Union Territory so that it can be set on the path of repair and reform on an underpinning of statistical measurement.

The IJR ranking data relies entirely on government data. With the help of our data partner, How India Lives and our technology partner at Frappe, we have created easy to access granular data sets visualised for simplicity while also providing information pertaining to over 500 data points for each state and Union Territory relating to diversity, workloads, budgets and infrastructure. Analysis of our data helps in filling capacity deficits, detecting prevalent trends and identifying data gaps.

Over three reports the IJR has found acceptance within policy circles and the media. Founded on measurable metrics it has amplified public discourse for reform and been cited in central and state legislatures as well begun to inform policy.

In this talk, we would like to discuss how we made better sense of raw justice data by converting it into an interactive website with visualizations using the powerful open-source software: Frappe Framework. This was done in partnership with the team at Frappe.

Love what they are doing with Justice data. They are bringing something to the world which is something not very visible. Let's give them a stage! If possible, as a lightning talk maybe.
