Skyline3D: Turning Your GitHub Contributions into a Physical Artifact

Approved

Ever looked at your GitHub contributions graph and wished it felt more real? Skyline3D takes your commits and turns them into a 3D skyline—one you can admire on-screen and 3D print as a physical artifact.

But this project wasn’t built overnight. Initially, I hacked together a ReactJS version and deployed it on GitHub Pages, but hosting it as a web app without exposing my secret GitHub access token was a challenge. Months later, I revisited the idea, rewrote it in NextJS, and deployed it on Vercel—making it accessible to any developer. Along the way, I faced hurdles with rendering performance, data parsing, and optimizing 3D models for printability.

In this lightning talk, I’ll walk through how Skyline3D evolved, the technical challenges I tackled, the delight-features I added and how you can use it to create your own 3D-printed commit history. Whether you’re a 3D enthusiast, an open-source contributor, or just love cool side-projects, this is a fun way to bring your code to life!
