AR-Based Museum Tour

An immersive AR platform built with React and Three.js that transforms museum visits into interactive digital journeys through 3D artifact exploration and virtual portals.

Description

The Problem

Traditional museums often struggle to engage younger, tech-savvy audiences. Physical artifacts are frequently hidden behind glass, limiting a visitor’s ability to understand their scale, texture, or historical context. Furthermore, accessibility is a major hurdle; many people cannot travel to world-class museums to see rare historical pieces.

The Solution

AR-Based Museum Tour is a web-based Augmented Reality platform that democratizes the museum experience. Built using React, Three.js, and AR.js, it allows users to bring high-quality 3D models of historical artifacts into their own physical space using just a smartphone browser.

Core Features & Innovation

  • Interactive 3D Inspection: Using Three.js, users can rotate, scale, and inspect digital artifacts with high-resolution textures, showing tiny details that are hard to see in real museum exhibits.

  • AR Portals: Implemented virtual "doorways" that allow users to physically walk through their screen into a 360-degree digital reconstruction of the artifact's original historical environment.

  • Gamified Restoration Module: To increase user retention, I added a feature where users can "repair" fractured digital artifacts using AR gestures, making the learning process interactive and fun.

  • Web-First Accessibility: By using AR.js, the project ensures cross-platform compatibility, making immersive education accessible to anyone with a camera-enabled device.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React.js

  • 3D Engine: Three.js / React Three Fiber

  • Augmented Reality: AR.js

  • Styling: CSS / Tailwind (for a modern, responsive UI)
