In this talk, we will explore the technological ecosystem driving IRIS, the student-developed university management portal of NITK Surathkal.
Which consists of an Admission Portal, Student and Faculty Portal, Online Course Learning Management and much more.
We will have an overview of how IRIS leverages open-source projects for its infrastructure and other internal systems. To name a few:
Nginx for all our Reverse proxy and load balancing needs
Gitlab for version control and deployments
Proxmox hypervisor as a virtualization platform
Moodle, as an open-source Learning Management System (LMS) integration for courses.
BigBlueButton, to watch and record lectures
Kubernetes for Scaling and high availability of Moodle
Elastic Search (Open source version), Kibana, and Redis for activity logs
Portainer, Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring.
Then we will Dive into the Staging-Server, developed by IRIS-NITK, designed to simplify the testing process for developers and testers. Its GUI enables you to Deploy your code to a staging area with just a few clicks and fast deployment time. The use of environmental variables and separate database containers makes it highly customizable and gives finer control over deployments
In essence, IRIS's journey demonstrates the potential of creating fully functional enterprise-level integrated software mainly by utilization of open-source tools
