As we live more of our lives online, the real-world impact of digital threats is growing. A single UPI scam can drain someone's life savings, a wrongly suspended YouTube channel can ruin a creator’s livelihood, and a hacked WhatsApp account can expose years of private conversations. Despite this, many of us still don't know where to look for help or what legal options we have.
This talk introduces RightsLine, a free digital rights helpline run by SFLC.in that connects people with expert legal guidance, and practical support. The session will explain how the platform helps users who are dealing with cyber fraud, arbitrary platform takedowns, online harassment, surveillance, and other digital rights violations understand their rights and access the right legal and grievance redressal channels, by drawing directly from SFLC.in's hands-on experience.
Finally, the session will look at a newer area of RightsLine's work: studying how privacy habits affect online safety. By analyzing anonymized case reports, SFLC.in is working to see if platform privacy settings, data collection practices, and personal security habits change a person's risk of being scammed. These insights will be used to create better public awareness campaigns and push for smarter policy recommendations.
