Beyond GSoC: Building an Open Source Culture Through Student Ambassador Programs

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Every year thousands of students hear about Google Summer of Code, but very few know about the hundreds of opportunities beyond it.

This talk introduces students to the wider open-source ecosystem—from Student Ambassador programs to open-source fellowships, campus communities, hackathons, documentation programs, and contribution opportunities.

Using the journey of building the NEXUS Student Community as a case study, I'll demonstrate how a student-led community can encourage beginners to contribute consistently to open source through mentorship, peer learning, and structured roadmaps.

The session will cover:

  • Why open source matters beyond resume building.

  • Student Ambassador Programs (GitHub, Google, Microsoft, Postman, Docker, GitLab, FOSS United, CNCF communities, etc.).

  • Open-source programs beyond GSoC:

  • GirlScript Summer of Code (GSSoC)

  • Social Summer of Code

  • Hacktoberfest

  • Outreachy

  • Season of KDE

  • Open Mainframe Project internships

  • MLH Fellowship

  • LFX Mentorship

  • CNCF Mentorship

  • How beginners can make their first contribution.

  • Building campus communities that sustain contributions throughout the year.

  • Designing a Code of Conduct that creates an inclusive environment.

  • Lessons learned while creating NEXUS.

  • Resources and roadmap for students to start contributing immediately.

The goal is to convince students that open source is not a three-month internship but a lifelong collaborative journey.

Key Takeaways

By the end of this session, attendees will:

• Understand that open source extends far beyond Google Summer of Code (GSoC).

• Discover 20+ Student Ambassador, Fellowship, and Open Source programs such as GitHub Campus Experts, Microsoft Learn Student Ambassadors, Google Developer Groups, GirlScript Summer of Code (GSSoC), Outreachy, MLH Fellowship, LFX Mentorship, Hacktoberfest, and more.

• Learn how to make their first open-source contribution even without prior experience.

• Understand how to find beginner-friendly repositories, choose issues, and submit successful pull requests.

• Learn how to build a sustainable student-led open-source community on campus through mentorship, events, and peer learning.

• Receive a practical roadmap to transition from being a beginner to an active contributor and community leader.

Hi, I'm Srijita Sarkar, an AI Engineering student and founder of NEXUS, a student-led technical community focused on open source, innovation, and peer learning.

I enjoy building AI applications, exploring open-source technologies, organizing technical events, and mentoring beginners. Through NEXUS, my goal is to help students discover opportunities beyond traditional internships by introducing them to open-source programs, Student Ambassador initiatives, and collaborative software development.
