Session Description

Europe isn't just talking about digital sovereignty anymore. They are practicing it.

Schleswig-Holstein is moving 30,000 workstations off Microsoft. France is deploying open productivity stacks across ministries. Denmark, the ICC, universities, hospitals, the list keeps growing everyday. All of this, simply to gain more control over their systems and data, and at the centre of all of this sits open source.

In this talk, we will talk about sovereignty. We will talk about autonomy. We will discuss what these migrations really look like in practice. We will see the architectural decisions, the deployment stories, and how the open source ecosystem completes a software where it lacks.

If you are wondering why a European talk at an Indian conference, well, that is the point. Everyone in the room can ask themselves some version of the same questions: how dependent are we on infrastructure we don't control? Is our data safe? Are we in control of our own data?

Europe is five years ahead on this journey. Let's learn from their stories, and answer these questions in India before it is too late.

Key Takeaways

After this talk, attendees will learn:

- What exactly is digital sovereignty, and why it is important?
- Examples of situations where we are dependent on the infrastructure we do not control
- The European Sovereignty Act, the EU tech Sovereignty Package
- How and why open source fits into this scene
- Popular open source tools that are shaping the future of tech
- How all of this fits into our daily life, and how they can help make this better
