FOSS: the broader, changing picture

Approved

FOSS is not well understood even today. FOSS is seen as "freedom to copy source code without paying anyone". This will be clarified in the first 1-2 minutes.

Then the evolution of the FOSS licences will be covered, from public domain to GPL Copyleft, to MIT, Affero, Apache, and some other licences: 5 mins.

Finally, the idea of intellectual property beyond open source will be explained, to show how the battle of access to source code has been sidestepped by various commercial strategies and communities. Examples will be covered of how the control has shifted from source code access to (a) trademark access to (b) access to communities, services and branding, and (c) freemium models. (d) How the importance of open source has reduced due to SaaS and due to data will be explained: (e) How FUD is deliberately used to push customers away from FOSS will be explained. 10-15 mins.

Wind up with Q&A.

Understanding the wider landscape in which FOSS operates, and how the FOSS source access is a small part of this landscape. This will allow (a) FOSS based entrepreneurs to decide where to operate in the landscape, and (b) customers to decide what to look for when looking at FOSS investments.
