FOSS United runs a diversity scholarship for IndiaFOSS. It helps people attend one festival. It does not change who hears about us, who speaks, who runs a FOSS Club, or who makes decisions.
So we went programme by programme. We sat with each programme manager to map who their programme reaches today and who it misses. Are we mostly giving visibility to male developers from tier-one cities? Can a student of science, the arts, geography or governance find a way in?
From this, we built a framework for year-round community work in India. It adapts the NumFOCUS DISCOVER Cookbook, which was written for conferences, to ongoing programmes. It looks at five areas: regional access, financial barriers, equal opportunity, representation, and new voices.
In this talk, we'll cover:
- what diversity means for Indian FOSS communities, beyond gender
- what we found when we mapped our own programmes
- what we are learning from FOSS Clubs
- the framework, with a short self-audit you can run with your team
We'd like feedback from people who run communities, so we can improve it.
