Designing elegant UI's for complex business software

Proposal status is Approved
Session Description

I’ve been working on Espresso for over a year now. Espresso is Frappe’s open source design system built in Collaboration with timeless.co. Frappe’s design philosophy has always been about designing subtle, aesthetic and elegant UI’s. That is probably one of our best selling point (even though we don’t like selling) wherein we offer our software for Free, but make sure that it’s comforting to use unlike traditional open source software. Which has had a history of ugly UI’s and bad UX flows.

In this talk, I’ll mostly talk and share my thoughts on what it is to directly jump into a 5 year old, mature design system and helping developers at Frappe make decisions on the UI and UX of our apps.

Key Takeaways
  1. Maintaining simplicity and craft while working on business app UI’s.

  2. Directly jumping into mature design systems without having to start from Scratch.

  3. Sharing some opinions and thoughts on skipping college and working at Frappe as a FT Designer.

Reviews

Thanks for the submission. FOSS software is often criticized for poor UI/UX compared to proprietary, corporate funded software, so a talk on how to design elegant UI is welcome.

We rarely have design talks, so might be good to show that good design matters in FOSS too :P . Disclosure: Sponsor Talk
