Build Robots the Open Source Way: Hands-On ROS 2

Proposal status is Review Pending
Session Description

In this 3-hour hands-on workshop we will journey into the world of ROS 2, the open source framework that is used in the robotics industry. The workshop will focus on building the foundations of ROS 2.

The workshop will cover the basics of ROS 2 using turtlesim, writing your own custom nodes in python and it will end with a simulated Turtlebot in Gazebo and rviz2. The goal of this workshop is to help students and developers with no background in Robotics to try their hand at robotics software.

Outline

  • ROS2 and it's use cases.

  • Core concepts (using turtlesim) : nodes, topics, services and parameters

  • Publisher, subscriber and robot control nodes in Python

  • Simulation and visualization with Gazebo and rviz2

  • The ROS 2 ecosystem and how to contribute

Prerequisites

  • Laptop with at least 8GB RAM

  • Ubuntu 24.04 with ROS 2 Jazzy, or Docker (I'll share a setup guide before the event)

  • Basic Python

Key Takeaways
  • Understand ROS 2 and its use cases in Robotics

  • Use ROS 2 CLI to run and inspect nodes, topics, services and parameters

  • Creating and building your own ROS 2 packages with colcon.

  • Write publisher and subscriber nodes in Python

  • Control a simulated robot and visualize its sensor data in rviz2

  • Know how to contribute to ROS 2
