Building Real-Time Location-Based Apps: Lessons from the Road

Review Pending
Session Description

Building real-time location-based apps means dealing with more than just maps you need fast, scalable ways to store and query geographical data. In this talk, I’ll share how I built a travel app using React Native and OpenStreetMap, with a focus on implementing efficient geographical indexing and spatial queries using open-source tools. I’ll also compare open solutions with Google Maps and discuss the trade-offs in performance, features, and openness.

Key Takeaways
  • How to store and query geospatial data efficiently using FOSS tools

  • Using OpenStreetMap with spatial indexing for location search

  • Comparing OSM-based indexing vs. Google Places APIs

  • Tools and techniques for building scalable, map-based apps

It's low stakes being a Lightning Talk. But Google Maps API it not FOSS and teaching people how to use it doesn't promote FOSS in any real way. If you could use OSM and maybe compare results and show the shortcomings and/or strengths of the 2 APIs then it would be more appropriate.
