Building Real-Time Location-Based Apps: Lessons from the Road

Proposal status is Review Pending
Session Description

Building real-time location-based apps means dealing with more than just maps you need fast, scalable ways to store and query geographical data. In this talk, I’ll share how I built a travel app using React Native and OpenStreetMap, with a focus on implementing efficient geographical indexing and spatial queries using open-source tools. I’ll also compare open solutions with Google Maps and discuss the trade-offs in performance, features, and openness.

Key Takeaways

  • How to store and query geospatial data efficiently using FOSS tools

  • Using OpenStreetMap with spatial indexing for location search

  • Comparing OSM-based indexing vs. Google Places APIs

  • Tools and techniques for building scalable, map-based apps
