Lightning Talk Intermediate First Talk

Building a Practical Open-Source Observability Stack for Modern Applications

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

When applications move from development to production, one of the first challenges teams face is understanding what is actually happening inside their systems.

I became interested in observability while working with cloud infrastructure and realizing how difficult it is to debug distributed systems without proper visibility.

Logs alone are often not enough. Metrics without context can be misleading. And when something breaks in production, teams usually end up jumping across multiple tools trying to find the root cause.

This is where observability becomes important.

In this session, I will walk through how a complete observability setup can be built using open-source tools that are widely used in modern infrastructure. Instead of focusing on theory, the talk will focus on a practical stack that developers and small teams can actually deploy and use.

We will explore how metrics, logs, and traces complement each other and how tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry can work together to provide better visibility into applications.

Example scenarios we will discuss:

Monitoring a backend service and detecting performance degradation

Tracking application metrics such as request latency and error rates

Visualizing system health using dashboards

Understanding how distributed tracing helps debug complex systems

The session will also briefly show how such a setup fits into containerized environments and modern deployment workflows.

The goal of this talk is not to introduce new tools, but to show how existing open-source tools can be combined into a simple, practical observability stack that developers can start using immediately.

Key Takeaways

Participants will learn:

The difference between monitoring and observability

Why metrics, logs, and traces are all important

How Prometheus and Grafana are commonly used together

A simple architecture for building an open-source observability stack

Practical ideas for adding observability to their own projects
