3D Printing is an amazing way to fabricate things. Why purchase something if you can design / remix / customise and fabricate things on your own.
The goal of this workshop is to introduce the basic concepts of 3D Printing to children (and everyone else too!) and encourage them to think in terms of designing what they want - instead of approximating it based on what's readily available for sale.
Starting with the basic principles of 3D design, during the workshop I will also illustrate the power of community using design repositories like Thingiverse and Printables. I will offer a basic introduction to free software CAD tools like Inkscape, OpenSCAD and proprietary ones like TInkercad. And finally, demonstrate the whole lifecycle from idea to design to fabrication using a 3D printer during the workshop. (If you are someone who is good with other free software design tools FreeCAD, I would invite you to join the workshop and talk about these tools.)
Based on how much time is available, if everyone designs something simple, they could very well take it home with them at the end of the workshop.
