Beyond Code: Nurturing Psychologically Safe Developer Communities

Rejected

Session Description

Imagine being a minority in the tech industry, let’s say you are a young brown woman in the final year of college willing to start a non-traditional career path as a developer. You end up joining an open-source community but don’t see many people who look like you. The excitement of belonging quickly fizzles into anxiety as every question you ask is unintentionally met with raised eyebrows and condescending remarks such as “I thought you would already know this” or “Oh that’s too easy a question to be asked”. This ultimately spirals into a vortex of imposter syndrome leaving you doubting your technical abilities.

This is exactly what a psychologically safe developer community should NOT look like. Through the talk, “Beyond Code: Nurturing Psychologically Safe Developer Communities” we shall be deep diving into the concept of psychological safety and why it's the cornerstone of any thriving developer community.

We'll explore how a haven where developers can speak up, ask questions, make mistakes and contribute without fear can transform not just one’s career trajectory, but the entire community's. The talk shall throw light on how seemingly simple conversations and actions can generate a sense of security that will help developers embrace lessons from errors and undertake interpersonal challenges. We’ll particularly embark upon how GitHub Campus Experts Program sets a benchmark as a psychologically safe space for student developers and what simple practices adopted here can be beneficial to any large-scale organization as well.

Not Sure
Community inclined talk. That's not a problem in itself but reading the proposal, my gut says this talk won't be as good. Maybe looking at the speaker's profile will bring more confidence.
