Using open source satellite imagery to monitor climate change in water bodies

Session Description

Is climate change real? - Despite the overwhelming scientific consensus, climate change is still a contentious topic. Politicians, policy makers, and companies continue to downplay its existence. But what if you could see undeniable visual evidence, using open source technologies, with your own eyes?

For this talk we'll be focusing on measuring the impact of climate change on water bodies and provide irrefutable proof of shrinking lakes and reservoirs, verifiable by anyone with access to the same open-source tools and data

We'll cover -

  • Finding high-quality open source satellite imagery provided by European Science Agency
  • Building an ML model in python that identifies a water body in a satellite imagery
  • Enabling the ML model to extract this arbitrary shape of the lake from the image, measure it's size in km2
  • Extracting the exact shape of the water body in the form of a GeoJSON
  • Storing this data in Postgres using an open source PostGIS plugin
  • How PostGIS transforms your database into a powerful geo-spatial data management system
  • Querying GIS data in Postgres like any other tabular data ( joins, sub queries, array manipulations etc )

Eventually run a live demo by feeding the ML model satellite imagery of a big well-known water body in India and visualise it change. This visual demonstration will provide reality of climate change and the power of open source in monitoring our planet's vital signs

The description doesn't have information about the interesting part (to identify climate change from the data in Postgres). Other than that, it seems like a technical walkthrough in getting data from sources and putting it in a database. Without working with this data, it doesn't feel complete.

it seems like they want to show how much the waterbody has shrunk from its original size.

This sounds interesting, but it's more suitable as a workshop. Contact them perhaps.

I like the topics the author will cover. It's publicises the process of playing with satellite imagery to build GIS applications.
