Putting the "F" (back) in "FOSS"
Session Description
Behind terms like "open source" and "FOSS" and the programmer-centric culture around them, Free Software and its focus on freedom is frequently forgotten, along with its importance for end users. Proprietary software is everywhere, despite there being perfectly viably Free Software to replace it. For our own sake, we need to advocate for Free Software in the world around us - but how should we go about it?
We talk about
+ the four software freedoms, and why they are important for end users (including real world examples),
+ some widely-used proprietary application/services, and free alternatives to them,
+ different approaches to running libre services - self-hosted, community-operated, and cooperatively-operated, and
+ the importance of free software advocacy, and different strategies for the same.
