Session Description

My Old Broken Phone Is Now My RSS Server

A few years ago, I broke my Poco F1 and replaced it with a Pixel. The Poco then sat in a drawer for years, until I realised I could probably make it useful again. So I turned it into my personal RSS server.

In this 10-minute lightning talk, I’ll show how I took a rooted, half-broken Android phone and turned it into a self-hosted Miniflux instance. I’ll cover the slightly ridiculous stack behind it: Termux, PostgreSQL, Tailscale, Android boot scripts, wakelocks, and some Tasker automation.

The end result is a tiny server sitting on my desk that keeps my RSS feeds synced across my phone, laptop and tablet - without renting a VPS.

It’s mostly a story about reusing old hardware and self-hosting things for fun.

Key Takeaways
  1. Using Android phones as reliable servers

  2. Brief intro to Termux, Tasker, Miniflux and Tailscale

  3. Self Hosting RSS Readers and Aggregators
