For the past few months I've been building a browser from scratch in Rust. It's called Sthalam, and it doesn't run HTML, CSS or JavaScript. Its pages are small Lua apps: an app describes its screen as boxes (columns, rows, text, shapes), and the browser lays it out and paints it on the GPU.
Under the hood it's built on wgpu, Vello, Parley and Taffy. App data lives in CRDT documents, so two people can edit the same thing and it merges. An AI can drive any app through a local socket: it reads the screen's structure, presses real buttons, and edits the app's source while it runs.
The whole talk runs inside the browser itself: the slides are a Lua app, and the demos are live apps embedded in them.
Demos
The slides themselves, written in Lua and running in Sthalam
A robotic arm built from nested rotating shapes
A 3D scene you can orbit, zoom and click on
Charts and a dashboard drawn entirely in Lua
A kanban board with drag and drop
A learning app for kids
Editing an app's code while it's running, which updates it on screen
