Hardware? In a Block Game??

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

When you think of Minecraft, computers are probably not the first thing that comes to mind.

If you watch Minecraft on youtube though, you probably have seen some youtubers build crazy stuff with redstone, an element to define power transmission in the game.

This is computational redstone, something I have only recently gotten into myself as it relates a lot to my interests in my electronic engineering course and computer architecture in general. This is my first talk of any manner so I guess its sort of a shot in the dark for me to talk about the stuff I am interested in!

Computational Redstone has taken off recently with the rise of youtubers like mattbattwings, one of the main inspirations behind me getting into this. Learning the blocks of computational redstone lets you discover virtually endless possibilities with what you can do with them. People have made calculators, videogames, language models among a lot of stuff. inside Minecraft, all using what is basically the foundation of computer architecture.

Since it is a 10 minute talk, I hope for it to be a decent introduction to the basic elements of computational redstone while showcasing whats possible using said elements, all while highlighting the awesome open source projects in relation to a game like Minecraft.

Hope you find this as fascinating as I do!

Its a rabbit hole I cannot guarantee you can get out of :D

Key Takeaways
  1. Understanding the basics of Computer Architecture in a Block Videogame (and beyond!)
  2. Perhaps looking at videogames like Minecraft with a viewpoint of more than “just a block game you waste time on”.
  3. Maybe taking it as a foundation to build on for getting into computer architecture in real life! Real life block game!
  4. Just having fun :D

Hello! I am a student currently in my 4th year of Electronics and Communication Engineering at PES University, Bangalore. I have always been interested in working with hardware and hope to continue doing so :D

I have worked on projects in relation to digital design in the VLSI field, including working on the RTL-to-GDS flow of an open source RISC-V core. Its brought me to the field of computer architecture as well, while developing a deep interest in the hardware implementation of different systems. I also am way too much into Minecraft than I'd like to admit :')

I still have a lot to learn, and too many project ideas I should stop procrastinating on. But more importantly than anything else, its a lot of fun :D
