That could have been a text file

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

I’d like to talk about this idea of tools vs appliances and how so many of the software applications (i.e. appliances) that we rely on could be replaced with just tools like text files, git, cron jobs, email, and so on. Just because we can build a free and open source app for something, doesn’t mean we should.

Key Takeaways
  • Thinking about open source with the additional lens of tools vs appliances.

  • Using tools as a way to reduce technical debt, improve accessibility, and maintainability.

  • Learning to question assumptions that tools like git are too complicated or intimidating for our clients.
