Session Description

AI has changed how we build software. Today, a contributor can generate a feature, write tests, draft documentation and open a pull request in minutes. For many open source projects, this means more contributions than ever before.

But here's the question we rarely ask:

If AI makes writing code easier, what becomes harder for maintainers?

Through my journey as an AI engineer, Smart India Hackathon judge, mentor, and open source community leader, I have seen that successful open source projects are built on much more than code. They depend on thoughtful reviews, clear documentation, welcoming contributor experiences, healthy discussions, shared ownership and trust things that no AI model can automate.

This talk explores how the role of an open source maintainer is evolving in the age of AI-assisted development. We will discuss practical challenges such as reviewing AI-generated pull requests, maintaining project quality, updating contributor guidelines, handling licensing concerns, preventing low-value contributions and preserving healthy communities as development accelerates.

This is not a talk about whether AI will replace developers. Instead, it is a conversation about why maintainers matter more than ever and how open source communities can embrace AI without losing the collaboration and values that make them successful.

Whether you are an experienced maintainer, a first-time contributor, or someone building with AI every day, you will leave with practical ideas for building stronger open source projects in an AI-first world.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand how AI-assisted development is changing open source contribution workflows.

  • Learn the new responsibilities and challenges facing open source maintainers.

  • Explore practical approaches to reviewing AI-generated contributions while maintaining quality.

  • Discover how documentation, governance, contributor guidelines and community practices become even more important in the age of AI.

  • Leave with actionable strategies for building open source communities where AI accelerates development without replacing collaboration.
