The Battle for the Commons: Open Governance & Architecture in Cloud Native Infrastructure

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Over the past 24 months, sudden corporate licensing shifts (such as BSL and SSPL) on foundational infrastructure projects have caught the engineering world off guard. These abrupt changes have forced DevOps architects and SREs to confront a hard truth: who actually owns and controls the building blocks of our cloud-native platforms, and how do we safeguard our stacks from vendor lock-in?

This technical session breaks down the structural, legal, and architectural mechanics of the CNCF and Linux Foundation ecosystems through the lens of "Open Governance." Moving past high-level policy, we will dissect real-world infrastructure pivot points—specifically the engineering mobilization behind OpenTofu (forking Terraform), the community-driven migration to Valkey (forking Redis), and the multi-vendor collaboration powering the Kubernetes Gateway API. Attendees will learn how open governance directly impacts code neutrality, architectural roadmaps, and upstream engineering sustainability.

What we will cover:

1. The Anatomy of a Neutral Fork: How the infrastructure community successfully transitions massive codebases, registry structures, and container ecosystems under neutral foundation control when a upstream license rug-pull occurs.

2. Multi-Vendor Engineering Consensus: An objective look at how projects like the Kubernetes Gateway API maintain architecture neutrality and avoid single-entity dominance despite heavy corporate engineering contributions from competing cloud providers.

3. The Infrastructure Sovereignty Checklist: A highly practical framework for platform teams to audit project governance metrics, contributor distribution, and vendor concentration risks before embedding an open-source tool into a core production stack.
