Don't Feed Your AI Stale Data: Stream Processing 101 with Kafka and Flink

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description
  • Everyone is talking about the latest LLMs and AI breakthroughs right now. But the truth is, AI is only as good as the data you feed it.

  • That is why the infrastructure behind how data moves and gets processed is still the most critical part of the stack. This can mean(for some use cases) building a real-time stream processing, event-driven architecture.

  • To do this, we have open-source software like Apache Kafka and Apache Flink that are incredibly well loved in the industry. Even though they are over a decade old, they still remain highly relevant in AI contexts and they help AI systems get the freshest and newest data.

  • This beginner friendly talk breaks down exactly what stream processing pipelines actually are, what we mean by "events", and how this whole real-time setup fits together. We will look at why Kafka and Flink make such a perfect team for moving data in real time.

  • To show the listeners how it works in the real world, I will walk through the architecture of a live news aggregator pipeline. I will show how Kafka sits to collect and aggregate the incoming news, and how Flink is used to transform it and move it directly into a vector database so an AI RAG system can use the freshest information.

Key Takeaways
  • Stream Processing Basics: What pipelines are, what counts as an "event," and how event-driven design differs from traditional batch databases.

  • Why Kafka: Why major companies prefer Kafka over Pulsar or AWS Kinesis.

  • Why Flink: Why Flink wins for true stream computing over Spark Streaming. (True Streaming by Flink vs. Micro-batching by Spark)

  • Core Jargon Simplified: A quick, beginner friendly guide to essential industry terms like Topics, Checkpoints and Watermarks.

  • The Architecture Diagram: A visual walk-through of a live news aggregator feeding a vector database to power an ultra fresh RAG.
