Session Description

Most UX practices are built around software operating in ideal conditions—stable connectivity, abundant resources, and predictable environments. Hardware products, however, introduce a different set of challenges where battery life, performance, thermal limits, connectivity, physical inputs, and real-world interruptions directly influence the user experience. Drawing from the design of Mecha Comet, this talk explores how constraints shape design decisions, why system states matter more than screens, and how designing for failure often becomes as important as designing for success. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of how UX changes when software leaves the browser and enters the physical world.

Key Takeaways
  • Designing UX around hardware constraints and real-world conditions.

  • Understanding the importance of system states, feedback, and failure management.

  • Applying a hardware-first mindset to create more resilient user experiences.

  • Using constraints as a framework for better design decisions.
