From Monolith to Microservices: Application Modernization with Istio

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Moving from monoliths to microservices is rarely a rewrite problem. The real challenge is modernizing existing systems without disrupting production.

In this talk, We will show how Istio enables a gradual and practical modernization approach. Kubernetes has become the standard platform for microservices, and Istio provides the traffic management, security, and observability needed for distributed systems.

The session demonstrates how a legacy application running on a virtual machine can be onboarded into a Kubernetes cluster using Istio. Once part of the service mesh, the VM behaves like a native workload, participating in service discovery, secure communication, traffic routing, and ingress flows.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand the challenges organizations face when modernizing monolithic applications.

  • Learn why a complete rewrite is not always the best path to modernization.

  • Explore how Istio can help bridge legacy VM-based workloads and cloud-native Kubernetes services.

  • Discover patterns for gradually decomposing monoliths into microservices with minimal disruption.

  • Gain insights into service mesh capabilities such as traffic management, security, and observability during modernization.

  • See a practical demonstration of connecting legacy workloads and Kubernetes applications using Istio.

  • Learn strategies for reducing migration risk while enabling incremental adoption of cloud-native architectures.
