Flutter Beyond the Screen: Building Embedded Linux Apps with flutter-elinux

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Flutter is widely known for building beautiful cross-platform mobile and desktop apps — but what if you could run the same Flutter UI on an embedded Linux device like a Comet, Raspberry Pi, or a custom SBC? That's exactly what the flutter-elinux embedder makes possible.

In this talk, we'll go deep into how the flutter-elinux embedder works under the hood — exploring how it bridges Flutter's rendering engine with the Linux graphics stack (Wayland, DRM/KMS) to bring rich, hardware-accelerated UIs to resource-constrained embedded systems.

We'll also explore how flutter_rust_bridge (FRB) fits into this picture — enabling seamless, type-safe communication between Flutter (Dart) and Rust. On embedded systems, where performance and safety matter most, FRB lets you write hardware-interfacing or compute-heavy logic in Rust while keeping your UI layer in Flutter, with zero manual FFI boilerplate.

Key Takeaways

Understand the Flutter embedder architecture — how Flutter's engine is decoupled from the platform, enabling custom targets beyond mobile and desktop.

See a practical walkthrough of setting up a Flutter app to run on an embedded Linux device (e.g. Comet).

Minesh Purohit Software Engineer - II | Mechasystems

I am Minesh Purohit, a software developer with over 5 years of experience. I have been with Mechasystems since its early days and currently focus on bringing modern UI frameworks and systems programming to embedded and hardware-adjacent environments. My core expertise is in Rust and Flutter.

I have recently contributed to flutter-embedded-linux #19 — the project that makes Flutter run on embedded Linux devices. My hands-on work at the intersection of Flutter, Rust, and embedded systems gives me a practitioner's perspective on this emerging space.
