Infrastructure as Design: Rethinking Cloud Native Operations Beyond YAML

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

As cloud-native systems grow, so does their complexity. A single application can span dozens of services, infrastructure components, policies, and dependencies spread across clusters and repositories. While Infrastructure as Code has become the standard for managing these environments, understanding how everything fits together often requires navigating countless YAML files and dashboards.

In this talk, we'll explore the emerging concept of Infrastructure as Design, an approach that treats infrastructure as a connected system that can be visualized, understood, and collaboratively managed. Through live demonstrations using Meshery, we'll see how cloud-native infrastructure can be modeled through components and relationships, enabling engineers to better understand architectures, discover dependencies, review changes, and operate systems with greater confidence.

Whether you're a Kubernetes practitioner, platform engineer, or DevOps enthusiast, this session will offer a fresh perspective on managing modern infrastructure and show how visual workflows can complement existing Infrastructure as Code and GitOps practices.

Key Takeaways
  1. Understand how Infrastructure as Design helps teams reason about cloud-native systems through components, relationships, and visual models rather than isolated configurations.

  2. Learn how to discover and visualize dependencies between services, infrastructure resources, and cloud-native components to gain a clearer understanding of system architecture.

  3. Explore how infrastructure can be represented as reusable, shareable designs that improve collaboration, reviewability, and consistency across teams.

  4. Learn practical techniques for importing, modeling, and managing existing cloud-native infrastructure through visual workflows without abandoning Infrastructure as Code practices.

  5. Understand how relationship-aware infrastructure management can improve architecture reviews, change planning, troubleshooting, and operational decision-making.
