How to Start Contributing to the Linux Kernel: A Beginner's Roadmap

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Kernel development looks intimidating from the outside, with a massive codebase, mailing lists, strict formatting rules, and no obvious entry point. But making your first contribution is more approachable than it seems if you know where to look.

This talk walks through the full process of making a beginner-friendly kernel contribution from scratch. We will learn setting up a development environment, understanding how the source tree is organized, finding simple cleanup tasks in the staging tree, writing a patch, running checkpatch, and submitting it to the right mailing list. Every step will be shown concretely, so you leave knowing exactly what to do next.

Basic familiarity with C and the Linux command line is expected.

Key Takeaways
  • Set up a kernel build environment on your own machine

  • Navigate the kernel source tree and find beginner-friendly tasks in the staging tree

  • Write, format, validate and test a patch using built-in scripts

  • Understand the kernel's AI contribution policy and how it affects patch submission

  • Submit a patch to the correct mailing list and understand what happens next

I am someone who loves exploring how systems work at their lowest level. I enjoy doing little experiments like running fork bombs on my PC just to see how fast my system will crash, and observe the overall system behavior. I document my learning and explorations on the Dev Community, where I break down Linux troubleshooting, system internals, and practical debugging approaches.
