Beyond CRUD: Building Production-Ready Backend Systems with Open Source Tools

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Modern backend development goes beyond creating REST APIs. As applications grow, developers need to think about reliability, performance, communication patterns, and deployment workflows.

In this talk, I will share my journey of evolving backend applications from simple CRUD services into production-oriented systems using open-source technologies.

I will discuss practical lessons learned while integrating technologies such as Docker, Redis, and Apache Kafka into backend applications:

  • Moving from synchronous request-response patterns to event-driven communication

  • Using Redis for performance optimization and caching strategies

  • Understanding when message queues solve real engineering problems

  • Containerizing applications with Docker and managing development environments

  • Debugging issues that appear when moving from local development to deployed systems

The focus of this session is not a theoretical introduction to these technologies, but the engineering decisions, mistakes, and lessons learned while building real projects.

This talk aims to help developers understand how individual open-source tools fit together to create reliable backend systems.

Key Takeaways

After this talk, attendees will understand:

• Why production systems require more than CRUD APIs

• When to introduce caching using Redis

• How event-driven architecture with Kafka works

• How Docker improves development consistency

• Common challenges when scaling backend applications

• Practical lessons from building and deploying backend projects
