Don't Model Every Leaf: The Magic of Blender Geometry Nodes

Proposal status is Approved
Session Description

After I learned enough parts of the basics of Blender, I was left with a question: "Man, if I had to build a huge scene, does it mean I have to model every leaf, every rock, every branch???"

I was convinced that pro Blender users surely knew a better way. I looked around for what that might be. That's when I discovered upon Geometry Nodes.

At first it came off as complex. It felt like I should have a PhD in Vector Math to understand what it does. But soon, I started to really get a hang of it and enjoy it. At its core, Geometry Nodes is a fancy name for flow chart. Its a node-based tool set used for procedural modeling, animation, and scene generation. Its a way to put together a factory for manufacturing 3D art within Blender. It is what I now spend most of my time on, and its truly magical.

In this talk, we’re skipping the dry, overwhelming math and focusing on the magic. We will look at how Geometry Nodes can radically speed up your workflow, unlock happy accidents, and bring back the sheer joy of experimentation. I’ll share what Geometry Nodes is actually capable of, break down a few fun examples I’ve created, and if time permits we'll do a quick walk through on how to build a setup that instantly generates Minecraft-style terrain.

If you have tinkered around with Blender a bit, even if you have not clicked on the "New Node Tree"; or you are an experienced artist; this talk is for you.

If you have never heard of Blender, but have heard of Minecraft, you might still enjoy it!

Key Takeaways
  • Whats a Node?: An almost beginner-friendly look at what procedural art actually means.

  • Real-World Examples: A showcase of fun, practical projects built with nodes (and why they were so fun to make).

  • Live Build: Minecraft-style terrain generator.

Building a big Blender scene by hand always felt tedious, until I discovered Geometry Nodes, a node-based toolset for procedural 3D art. In this talk, we'll skip the dry math and focus on the magic: how Geometry Nodes can speed up your workflow, unlock happy accidents, and bring back the joy of experimentation, including an interesting demo!

About me: I've been learning modeling with Blender for close to 4 years now, and have conducted workshops both online and offline. Earlier this year, I made a YouTube tutorial series on Blender in Kannada, funded by a grant from FOSS United. This work builds on a longer journey of open-learning that started when I was 5, first with aarohilife.org and now independently as a 15-year-old.
