Art - meet Math - meet Code

This workshop would be an introduction to the world of creative coding via the lens of art and Math. The idea to bring these seemingly not coherent topics together is to inspire creativity and a bit of madness!

While a lot of FOSS tools have been focused on creating open source tools for the world of software and hardware development, projects like p5.js are focused on creating tools for artists and educators.

As part of this workshop, we would like to introduce participants to p5.js, and the world of creative coding.

In the workshop we will look at creating generative art using basic mathematical concepts. Some of the examples that we will be looking at - 

• 10Print

• Truchet tiling

• Archimedean Curves and Images

• Hilbert Curves (and cats!)

The workshop is designed for those with a bit of knowledge of programming paradigms (variables, conditionals, loops etc.). The workshop flow will be as follows

• What is p5.js? Why is it built the way it is

• Intro to p5 and it’s functions

• What is generative art, and how does programming play a role in it

• Make generative art with p5.js!

• Take it beyond what we cover - how can you bring in your own systems and creativity into what we’ve done so far

Logistics

• Participants will need devices to program on

• We will start using the p5 editor, but folks are welcome to move to preferred IDEs (eg - VSCode has a p5 extension that can be used)

• If using the p5 editor - we will need internet connection

• Duration : 90 - 120 minutes

• An introduction to creative coding and p5.js

• Learning about some systems that are a part of generative art

• Create 3-4 generative art pieces.
