Session Description

Open source software offers countless excellent applications, but many remain out of reach for everyday users because they require self-hosting or technical knowledge. For the past several years, I have been running FLOSSbOxIN, a self-funded platform that operates a collection of privacy-respecting public FOSS services, allowing anyone to use them without managing their own infrastructure.

This talk shares my experience of maintaining these services, the challenges of keeping them reliable and accessible, and why usability is often the missing piece in FOSS adoption. Rather than focusing on deployment or system administration, I will discuss how operating public services can be a meaningful contribution to the FOSS ecosystem, and why people who do not write code can still play an important role in making free software accessible to more users.

Key Takeaways

FLOSSbOxIN is an operational platform that aggregates and hosts existing FOSS services for public use, rather than a software project developed from scratch.

  1. Why excellent FOSS software often fails to reach everyday users, and how usability is just as important as functionality. → Why usability is often the biggest barrier to wider adoption of FOSS.
  2. The practical realities of operating public FOSS services, including reliability, maintenance, and user expectations. → What I've learnt from running public FOSS services over several years.
  3. How bringing together existing FOSS applications into a cohesive, privacy-respecting platform can lower the barrier to adoption. → The challenges of balancing privacy, reliability and ease of use.
  4. Why running and maintaining public services is a valuable contribution to the FOSS ecosystem, even if you do not write code. → Why contributing to FOSS isn't limited to writing code.
  5. Practical ideas for making FOSS more approachable and accessible within your own community or organisation. → Simple ways to help make free and open source software more accessible to everyday users.
