Beyond Code- Lessons from Building Open Source Communities

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Open source communities thrive because of people not just code. Every successful meetup, conference, or project is supported by volunteers, organizers, maintainers, reviewers, mentors, sponsors, and countless contributors working behind the scenes. While technical contributions are celebrated, the work of building and sustaining communities is often invisible.

In this talk, I'll share the lessons I've learned over more than eight years of organizing Python communities from volunteering at local meetups to leading regional and national conferences, serving as Chair of PyConf Hyderabad, co-chairing PyCon India, and being honored with the PSF Community Service Award. Rather than a personal success story, this session is about the principles, decisions, and practices that help communities grow and remain sustainable.

Through real experiences including volunteer onboarding, sponsor relationships, CFP reviews, Code of Conduct responsibilities, leadership transitions, resolving conflicts, and recovering from setbacks I will discuss what works, what doesn't, and why healthy communities depend on much more than passionate individuals.

Whether you're volunteering for your first event, leading a local meetup, maintaining an open source project, or helping organize a conference, you'll leave with practical strategies for building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities that continue to thrive long after any single organizer steps away.

Key Takeaways
