Commit to More Than Commits

Proposal status is Screening
Session Description

The cost of writing code is diminishing, and the open source community is arguing about who really counts as a contributor or a maintainer. This is a good moment to step back and look at the ecosystem through a zoomed-out lens: the digital commons.

The commons has always needed people who map, write, govern, translate, advocate, test and decide. But in school and at work, we've always been narrowed to picture open source as Git commits and OS installation parties. In fifteen minutes I want to look at what it means to be a generic programmer in the age of AI, why developing a culture of questioning systems is important, and what the digital commons really is. Ending with three concrete ways to join the non-code work happening in the FOSS United community (Volunteering, RTIs, Tech policy discussions).

Key Takeaways
  1. Discussion on what a programmer's work looks like in the age of AI, and where human judgment still holds its value.
  2. How broader digital commons work develops the skill to understand and question whole systems.
  3. Three ways to join FOSS United Foundation's digital commons work
