Accelerate Domain Context Switch with FOSS and AI Tools

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) offers an excellent opportunity for engineers to maintain their technical edge and continue contributing to their fields, even during a career break or transitioning to new domains. Most of the women, including me, joined platforms such as JobsForHer, SheCodes, AspireForHer, SmartStart to access referrals or apply for "return-to-work" job postings post career break. But the potential of FOSS as a platform for growth remains largely under utilised and unknown.

For those passionate about engineering, FOSS provides a unique forum for knowledge sharing and hands-on contribution. Navigating the software industry after a hiatus often requires adapting to new domains. While you may not immediately return to a role identical to your previous one, deep domain knowledge remains critical for delivering quality software. Today, AI tools like Claude Code, Gemini, ChatGPT can significantly accelerate this transition, helping developers grasp complex new contexts at a faster pace. Your technical expertise never truly disappears; it simply requires a focused revival. It just requires a mix of interest, enthusiasm to learn, and the ability to apply logical reasoning to AI output. With AI and your past experience you can rebuild your technical confidence and contribute more effectively than ever. The core principles of software engineering remain constant, whether in the AI-driven or traditional world.

This talk explores how leveraging FOSS, modern AI tools and open standards can empower you to stay connected to your passion and thrive in the technology sector. FOSS projects expose developers to widely adopted open standards such as FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) in medical field, OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect and AI tools can accelerate learning these standards, understanding unfamiliar codebases, and contributing effectively. You can construct Claude Skills or use ChatGPT/ Gemini across different phases of SDLC lifecycle. When in doubt, these tools can give you a head start in understanding open standards documentation, large codebases with targeted and relevant documentation. Your past experience can help avoid running into AI hallucinations and improve your code/ document quality.

Key Takeaways

Always revisit software principles basics, it never changes

Go back to academics, when in doubt; use Claude/ AI skills with understanding and revisit/ refine each output

Women in Tech can benefit from AI but in a structured and systematic manner, than being overloaded/ overwhelmed by amount of information

Ways to enhance domain knowledge with change in your learning/ past experience context
