Navigating the FOSS Contribution Journey

Many developers see open source as a destination: get your first pull request merged, participate in Hacktoberfest, maybe even crack Google Summer of Code. But in reality, open source is a journey - one that evolves from curiosity to contribution, from contribution to ownership, and from ownership to leadership.

In this talk, I will share my unconventional path through the FOSS ecosystem. What started as participation in FOSS Hack (India's largest open-source hackathon) eventually led to building and maintaining projects used by thousands of developers, and growing it into an official Google Summer of Code organization, mentoring contributors worldwide.

Through stories of first contributions, rejected pull requests, community building, mentorship, and project stewardship, this session will explore what it really takes to grow in open source. We'll discuss how contributors can find projects they genuinely care about, navigate complex codebases, build credibility within communities, and transition from being "someone who contributes" to someone who creates opportunities for others.

We will also cover how contributing to large-scale industry led open source projects requires a slightly different approach.
