Burn genAI to the ground

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Generative AI - specifically, LLMs used to generate code, text, images, and videos - is an inherently fascist technology, regardless of who uses it and for what.

We talk about the numerous issues present in the training and use of genAI

  1. Environmental issues

  2. Web service exploitation

  3. Worker exploitation

  4. Privacy issues

  5. Psychological issues

  6. Economic issues

  7. Violation of the free/libre/open software/data/media contract

  8. Moral issues

  9. User software freedom issues

...and debunk the very prevalent and very superficial responses to the same -

  1. "But can't we use AI for good?"

  2. "But can't we run LLMs locally?"

  3. "It already exists, so why not use it?"

  4. "Isn't it inevitable? Hasn't the horse already bolted?"

  5. "I can't do anything, I'm just a user/developer/CTO/CEO!"

We then discuss the means of defeating genAI, from individual to institutional. We also discuss the need for organization among tech workers, and for solidarity with other workers (e.g. writers, translators, and artists).
