Functional Packaging and Reproducible Builds with Nix

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

This talk is about how Nix enables functional packaging and reproducible builds to make software development and deployment more reliable. Thanks to Nix’s deterministic nature, dependencies can always be pinned, and hash-verifiable derivations can be created for everything - from development shells to packages. No prior experience with Nix is required; attendees only need basic familiarity with Linux environments.

Attendees will see how Nix provides consistent development environments across Linux and macOS systems, including CI/CD pipelines and testing, ensuring predictable behavior across both local and remote environments.

The talk will also touch on related topics, including Nix, a functional programming language, insights into nixpkgs (the package repository for Nix and NixOS), and an introduction to NixOS, a GNU/Linux distribution built entirely on Nix.

Key Takeaways

A deterministic build system like Nix helps reduce environment drift, minimize manual configuration, and makes the process of continuous integration and building a much easier endeavor. It also enhances the developer experience by providing not only reproducible packages but also reproducible build environments and custom development shells. This helps eliminate the “works on my machine” problem within teams.
