Understanding Laravel Applications with Neo4j MCP and Graph Intelligence

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Modern AI coding assistants are excellent at searching source code, generating code, and answering questions about individual files. However, they often struggle to understand how a large application is actually wired together. Runtime dependency relationships, service container bindings, facades, and architectural connections are difficult to infer through source code search alone.

Neo4j Boost is an open-source Laravel package that combines Neo4j, Laravel Boost, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide AI assistants with architectural awareness. Instead of relying solely on text-based search, applications can be represented as knowledge graphs, allowing developers and AI tools to explore dependencies, service relationships, and runtime architecture through graph queries.

In this talk, we will explore how Laravel dependency relationships can be exported into Neo4j, how the official Neo4j MCP server integrates with Laravel Boost, and how graph-powered context enables more intelligent debugging, architecture exploration, and developer productivity.

The session demonstrates how service container bindings, dependency injection relationships, facades, and runtime dependencies can be modeled as a graph and queried using Neo4j. Attendees will learn how AI assistants such as Cursor and Claude can leverage graph-backed context to answer architectural questions that are difficult to solve using traditional code search techniques.

We will also discuss the design and implementation of Neo4j Boost, the challenges of integrating MCP with Laravel applications, and practical lessons learned while building an open-source project that combines graph databases, AI tooling, and modern PHP development practices.

The talk includes a live demonstration showing how a Laravel application can be transformed into a navigable knowledge graph and how AI-powered development tools can use this graph to provide deeper architectural insights.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand how MCP enables AI assistants to interact with external tools and application context.

  • Learn why graph databases provide a natural representation of software architecture and dependency relationships.

  • Discover practical techniques for exploring Laravel application dependencies and runtime behavior.

  • See how Neo4j can provide architectural intelligence for AI-assisted development workflows.

  • Learn how graph-powered context can improve debugging, onboarding, and software comprehension.

  • Understand how open-source technologies can be combined to build more capable developer experiences.

  • Gain insights from building and maintaining Neo4j Boost as an open-source project.
