How did we write an Operating System from scratch? Learn & experience XenevaOS

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Operating System development is usually seen as something only massive tech companies can do, but we decided to build one completely from scratch. In this workshop, we are going to break down the low-level systems programming using our own project, XenevaOS, as a live blueprint.

We will walk you through the reality of building a custom hybrid kernel, configuring the development environment, and handling the tricky process of cross-compiling. Instead of just looking at slides or running emulators, we will dive into multi-architecture support and show XenevaOS running live on actual, bare-metal hardware.

To wrap things up, we’ll share the unfiltered journey of developing this project to its current stage, including a look at the custom hardware prototypes our team has built as proof-of-concepts for spatial computing.

Key Takeaways

The Reality of OS-Development: An honest explanation of basic OS development through the concrete example of XenevaOS and its hybrid kernel architecture.

OS Blueprint: A practical guide to starting and building your own operating system (if you're crazy enough to try).

Setting Up the Environment: A step by step walkthrough on setting up the environment needed to actually build and run XenevaOS.

Multi-Architecture Integration: Running and experiencing how XenevaOS runs across different architectures (x86_64, ARM, and RISC-V).

Bare-Metal Deployment: Running and experiencing XenevaOS run on real hardware like the Raspberry Pi, NXP iMX8M+, and potentially more.

The Journey So Far: A brief, transparent summary of our development journey, challenges, and lessons learned while scaling this project.

Hardware Prototypes : A firsthand look at the physical hardware prototypes custom-built by our team to push XenevaOS into the real world.
