CS17: CS Education ❤️ FOSS

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

In this talk, I want to share my story of building CS17 School of Programming at Jagdalpur. CS17 is a non-traditional programme aimed to transform high school pass outs to competent developers with strong Computer Science fundamentals. CS17 is backed by Azim Premji Foundation and is 100% free. Unlike traditional bootcamps, it is residential and also vast: spanning 18 months of rigorous training.

Why is this relevant?

Because the curriculum in built around and with my experience in the FOSS ecosystem! Some examples: Linux from Day 1 (some of them had never used a computer before), LibreOffice suite, GIMP, and Frappe Framework.

Key Takeaways
  1. How the programme came to be?
  2. How is this connected to Harvard's CS50?
  3. How is this different from the traditional CS education?
  4. A dive into the curriculum (which is also "open source") design and iterative improvements
  5. Difficulties and how we overcame them
  6. The bigger picture and the landscape of CS education in India
