Modernizing Legacy Development Workflows Without Losing History

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Many enterprise engineering teams still rely on legacy version control and defect tracking systems that were designed for a different era of software development. CMVC (Configuration Management Version Control) helped organizations manage large-scale development for decades, but modern engineering practices increasingly require distributed version control, collaborative workflows, automation, CI/CD integration, and developer friendly tooling.

The challenge is not only moving source code to a modern platform, it is preserving the valuable engineering history engineering knowledge built over years(source history, releases, defects, and traceability).

This session presents a practical approach to migrating from CMVC(Legacy Source Control Management tools) to Git while preserving both source code history and defect lifecycle information. We will demonstrate how custom migration tooling can extract required artifacts, convert source history into Git commits, migrate defects into Git issues, and retain important metadata such as authors, timestamps, status, ownership, comments, and relationships between code changes and defects.

Through migration examples and a live demonstration, attendees will learn how legacy source control systems can be transformed into modern Git based workflows while keeping historical context intact.

Key Takeaways

Attendees will learn how to:

  1. Plan a Legacy Source Control Management to Git migration covering source code and defect data.
  2. Preserve source history including authors, timestamps, releases, branches, and traceability.
  3. Migrate defects while retaining IDs, descriptions, status, ownership, comments, and metadata.
  4. Automate migration using scripts instead of manual processes.
  5. Validate migrated repositories and defect records for accuracy.
  6. Transition from centralized Source Control Management workflows to modern Git based collaboration.
