Session Description

llmgate: Building an Open Source AI Gateway for AI Developer Tools

AI-powered developer tools have become an essential part of modern software development, but they also introduce a new challenge: developers have limited visibility and control over the requests sent from their local environments to remote language models. Organizations need ways to inspect AI traffic, enforce security policies, monitor usage, and protect sensitive information without disrupting existing developer workflows.

This talk introduces llmgate, an open-source AI gateway built as a lightweight Python gateway that sits transparently between AI developer tools and language model providers.

The initial implementation supports Claude Code through its documented proxy configuration, while the gateway architecture is designed to support additional AI developer tools and model providers through a pluggable provider interface.

Acting as a local middleware layer, llmgate inspects outbound requests before they leave the developer's machine while forwarding streaming responses without modification, preserving the existing developer experience.

We'll explore how llmgate is structured around a modular provider abstraction, policy engine, analyzers, and pluggable collectors that enable security, observability, and extensibility while remaining transparent to existing developer tools.

  • Detect and prevent accidental leakage of API keys, credentials, and sensitive information before requests are forwarded.

  • Enforce configurable security policies through a JSON-based rule engine without requiring Python code changes.

  • Track token usage and cumulative session costs in real time, with durable limits that survive proxy restarts.

  • Collect audit logs and send real-time alerts to Slack, webhooks, or databases through a pluggable collector architecture.

  • Support additional AI developer tools and model providers through an extensible provider interface while reusing the same rules, analyzers, and collectors.

Rather than modifying AI clients, llmgate demonstrates how standard proxy infrastructure can be used to build transparent, privacy-aware, and extensible middleware for AI development workflows.
