Open Source for Women in Tech: Building Inclusive Communities That Last

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Open source has transformed the technology landscape by enabling people from around the world to collaborate, learn, and innovate together. However, participation in open source is not just about access to code—it is also shaped by the communities that welcome, support, and empower contributors.

While more women are entering the technology industry than ever before, many still face challenges when taking their first steps into open source. Lack of awareness, confidence gaps, limited mentorship, and unclear contribution pathways often prevent talented individuals from becoming active contributors and long-term community members.

In this talk, I will explore how inclusive communities can help bridge these gaps and create sustainable pathways for women in open source. Drawing from my experiences in software engineering, community leadership, mentoring, public speaking, and women-focused tech initiatives, I will share practical lessons on fostering environments where contributors feel encouraged to learn, participate, and grow.

The session will cover:

• Common barriers women face when entering open-source communities

• Why inclusion is essential for healthy and sustainable FOSS ecosystems

• The role of mentorship, onboarding, and community support

• Creating contribution opportunities beyond code

• Building confidence through knowledge sharing and collaboration

• Community practices that improve participation and long-term engagement

• Lessons from successful initiatives that empower women in technology

Attendees will gain actionable insights into building more welcoming and inclusive open-source communities while also discovering ways they can contribute to making FOSS accessible to a broader and more diverse audience.

Whether you are a contributor, maintainer, community organizer, educator, or technology enthusiast, this talk will provide practical ideas for creating communities that not only attract contributors but help them thrive.
