Session Description

Modern software is rarely built from scratch. Every production system we deploy today stands on the shoulders of dozens of mature open-source projects. Yet many developers see these projects as isolated tools rather than parts of a cohesive engineering ecosystem.

This talk presents a practical blueprint for building a production-ready application using open-source technologies—from the first line of code to operating a reliable system in production.

Instead of introducing tools one by one, we follow the lifecycle of an application. At each stage, we'll identify the engineering problem that needs to be solved, explore the architectural or design pattern behind the solution, and examine how widely adopted open-source projects implement those ideas.

The session covers version control, development workflows, authentication, API gateways, databases, caching, messaging, observability, CI/CD, deployment, and production operations. Along the way, we'll connect engineering patterns such as middleware, worker pools, retries, circuit breakers, pub/sub, caching, and health checks to real-world open-source projects.

Attendees won't just leave with a list of tools—they'll understand why these tools exist, how they complement each other, and how to make informed architectural decisions when building modern software.

Whether you're building your first side project, working in a startup, or designing enterprise systems, this talk provides a practical mental model for assembling a modern engineering stack powered by open source.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand the complete journey from idea to production through the lens of open-source software.

  • Learn the engineering problems solved at each stage of the Software Development Lifecycle.

  • Discover how common engineering patterns such as caching, retries, worker pools, middleware, and observability appear across popular open-source projects.

  • Learn how projects like Git, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Keycloak, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and Kubernetes fit together in a production architecture.

  • Gain a reusable blueprint for selecting technologies based on engineering needs instead of trends.

  • Leave with practical guidance for designing maintainable, scalable, and production-ready applications.
