Beyond the PR: Contributing with AI, Collaborating with Humans

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

AI has made it easier than ever to contribute to open source. New contributors can understand unfamiliar codebases, generate patches, and submit pull requests faster than ever before. While this has lowered the barrier to entry, it has also changed how contributors learn, collaborate, and interact with maintainers.

As someone who started as a GSoC contributor in 2020 and now serves as a maintainer and GSoC Org Admin at OpenWISP, I've observed this transition from both sides. In this talk, I will explore how the contributor journey is evolving in the age of AI:

  1. How newcomers traditionally entered open source, and why understanding a project often took significant time before making a first contribution.

  2. What AI has changed, including the opportunities it creates for learning, onboarding, and participation.

  3. Real examples from OpenWISP showing where AI-assisted contributions help contributors succeed and where they can unintentionally create extra work for maintainers when solutions are submitted before the problem is fully understood.

  4. Why open source is about much more than submitting pull requests, and how contributors can create value through testing, bug verification, documentation, triage, and community participation.

  5. Practical guidelines for using AI responsibly, understanding the problem, validating solutions, and taking ownership of contributions.

  6. How meaningful participation helps contributors build trust, credibility, and long-term relationships within open source communities.

Rather than debating whether AI is good or bad for open source, this talk focuses on how contributors can use AI to become better collaborators and how communities can preserve the shared responsibility that makes open source successful.

Key Takeaways
  • Not all open source contributions are equal. A GitHub profile full of AI-generated or low-effort PRs is unlikely to help your career. Meaningful contributions that demonstrate understanding, problem-solving, and collaboration will.

  • Take pride in your work. The real value of open source comes from going through the full cycle of understanding a problem, building a solution, debugging it, testing it, and seeing it through to completion.
