Movim: A Decentralized, Federated and Libre Alternative to Discord

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Communication platforms are ubiquitous in our daily lives, regardless of whether we are users trying to be in touch with others or programmers collaborating with others on a project. Unfortunately most of us usually opt for unethical software, such as Discord for such purposes. This is terrible not only because Discord is non-free software, but also because it directly infringes on our privacy.

In this talk I will introduce and demonstrate a new platform called Movim and how it can be a privacy-respecting libre alternative to Discord. Movim is a XMPP client that is designed with decentralization, federalism and privacy in mind. It is a PWA (Progressive Web App) that runs across all major platforms, including Android and iOS.

The structure of the talk will be as follows:

  • The Need for a Libre Alternative to Discord

  • A Brief Introduction to XMPP

  • How Movim Works

  • Creating an Account on Movim and Getting Started

  • How To Create/Join Spaces in Movim (like Discord’s Servers!)

  • Multi-Party Voice/Video Calls and Screensharing with Movim

  • Explore Blogs and Communities in Movim

  • Upcoming Features in Movim

In conclusion, I will emphasize on the community aspect of XMPP & Movim and how one can begin to contribute!

Key Takeaways
  • How XMPP as a protocol can power truly decentralized and federated applications & communities

  • Learn how to get onboarded to Movim

  • Understand how to collaborate together and publish blogs using Movim

  • The benefits and challenges of building self-hosted alternatives to centralized services

I self-host an instance of Movim for my community. I am a package maintainer at GNU Guix, author of a few Emacs packages. I am ardent supporter of Free/Libre Software. I have an interest in various programming languages, most importantly the Lisps, the functional languages (Haskell, ML), Ada and Rust. For my day job, I work as a cryptographer.

Anything that lives at the intersection of philosophy, mathematics and computing is of immense interest to me.
