Sound Is All You Need: From Good UX to Great UX

So when we think about great design what comes to our mind is great visuals, sleek UI, futuristic interfaces. But here's something we don't really think about, vision is directional, it demands your full attention, while sound is omnidirectional, it works in the background. And yet sound is probably the most ignored detail in design today.

As we all know the devil lies in the details, and sound is that detail. Remove it and things fall apart. Add it back and everything clicks, literally. We have seen this so many times, every time something physical gets replaced by something digital, sound comes for the rescue. iPhone replaced the physical keyboard, so they added haptic and sound. Apple Pencil replaced pen on paper, so it started emitting the sound of pen rubbing against paper. Google Maps plays a reroute chime because no pop-up could do that job safely while driving.

Now as AI evolves from text to voice and VR removes all physical surfaces, sound is going to become even more essential because when there is no physical surface we need to give the user something to hold onto. But more sound isn't better sound, there's a point where every ping becomes noise and users stop hearing anything, including the alerts that actually matter.

This lightning talk covers what HCI research tells us about sound in interaction design, when it helps, when it becomes noise, and what open-source tools already exist for developers who want to stop treating sound as an afterthought.
